The case for classless CSS

For years, the frontend community has gravitated toward utility-first CSS frameworks. They solve real problems — but they also create new ones. Let's examine what we lose when every style becomes a class.
The problem with utilities
Utility classes are verbose. A single button can carry 6+ classes. The HTML becomes hard to read, hard to write by hand, and easy to get wrong. AI assistants struggle to emit the correct combination.
Attributes solve this. <button primary> is semantic, concise, and unambiguous. The variant is the attribute.

Native HTML5 as a first-class citizen
The browser already has <dialog>, popover, <details>, anchor positioning, and view transitions. A good framework embraces these instead of reimplementing them in JavaScript.
